Academic Qualifications
Documented educational requirements that enable someone to work in a particular trade, profession, or higher-level educational institution. Formal study and successful completion, or partial completion, of a program is involved.
Accreditation
A formal process that reviews private post-secondary schools and colleges and/or the content of programs to ensure they meet specific standards.
Alternative Work Arrangements
Work arrangements that allow employees more flexible work and shorter hours. These include job sharing, flex-time and compressed work weeks.
Apprentice
A person learning their trade on the job, under the supervision of a certified journeyperson. An apprentice must complete on-the-job training and in-school instruction.
Apprenticeship
An industry-based program that combines on-the-job experiential learning with technical training to produce a qualified and certified journeyperson.
Apprenticeship Advisory Board
A provincial or territorial government appointed Board that advises the Minister responsible for labour market matters on issues related to training and certification of persons in designated trades.
Apprenticeship Contract / Agreement
A document signed by the employer, sponsor, or joint apprenticeship training committee and apprentice, outlining the conditions and responsibilities of both parties for the term of apprenticeship.
Apprenticeship Legislation
Acts and regulations that govern the administration of apprenticeship and related programs, including the training and certification of apprentices and tradespersons. Legislation exists in each province and territory.
Aptitude
Natural ability or capacity for learning.
Articling / Internship
A period of practical, supervised, on-the-job training. It is designed to supplement formal study and give the individual the skills and knowledge required for entry into a trade or profession.
Assessment
A process that includes gathering information, identifying issues & needs, and clarifying personal and environmental resources in relation to career-related issues and needs.
Assessment Methods
A variety of formal and informal techniques such as standardized and non-standardized instruments, interviews, personality measures, questionnaires, checklists, behavioural observations, and reports by significant others.
